WHAT DOES THE OCEAN HAVE TO DO WITH INSURANCE?

The UN Ocean Conference took place in France in June 2025 and was positioned to convene institutions, local governments, businesses and civil society organisations globally – all with a focus on marine environmental protection and governance. The declaration stated:“ The ocean is fundamental to life on our planet and to our future. [ It ] is a critical source of the planet’ s biodiversity and plays a pivotal role in the climate system and water cycle.” Organisations like France-based insurance giant AXA now have a sharp focus on climate change, given the impact climate change could have on the insurance industry. Ultimately, insurance is about managing risk and climate change represents a very significant planetary risk.
